UX Strategy and UX Lab

2019 - 2022

Alongside talented colleagues, I developed a strategy to increase the awareness and importance of UX research, and managed a state-of-the-art UX Lab.

Role: Senior UX Researcher

How can we bring solid, rigorous UX research practices across all divisions in Credit Suisse?

Strategy

To build a compelling case for establishing a UX Lab, my team conducted an analysis and determined that our in-house team could potentially save approximately 1.85 million CHF over a span of three years by conducting the UX research internally rather than outsourcing to an external agency. In addition, keeping the research within our organization rather than outsourcing allowed teams to avoid a cumbersome compliance process.

During my tenure at Credit Suisse, we took proactive measures to raise awareness about UX research by organizing weekly lab tours and inviting senior stakeholders from across the company to participate. These tours proved instrumental in promoting the importance of UX research and fostering engagement in impactful and strategic initiatives. They also facilitated valuable connections across various divisions, including investment banking, asset management, retail banking, HR, and marketing.

By establishing solid relationships that spanned multiple divisions, we served as the central point of contact for senior stakeholders and played a pivotal role in aligning their technology initiatives, and providing valuable work to design teams. Through our dedication to delivering high-quality UX work, we successfully enhanced the reputation of UX research, leading to it being brought alongside the design function rather than being subordinate to it.

Research room

The lab featured a dedicated research room equipped with three strategically positioned cameras that provided a live-feed into the observation room. The room had eye tracking, allowing us to study participants' gaze patterns and gain insights into their attention and engagement. We also had a Face Reader, enabling us to capture and analyze participants' facial expressions.

Observation room

Adjacent to the research room, the observation room provided a comfortable environment for researchers and stakeholders to closely monitor and analyze user interactions. Equipped with technology that allowed observers to conveniently take notes and document important insights in real time, with the ability to tag observations as positive, negative, missing feature, or as a quote for later reference.

Results and impact

Here's some outcomes as a result of this work:

  • My research work generated 600K CHF for our department for development and design work

  • Introduced design sprints to Credit Suisse with a design colleague to create a new Sustainability website on credit-suisse.com

  • Collaborated closely with managing directors to increase impact and influence company strategy

  • Exceeded expectations on my performance reviews for two years in a row

  • Selected for the development circle, in which I was paired with a mentor who was a senior advisor to the CEO Thomas Gottstein, and invited to exclusive events
